Here he is, all done. I really tried to go all out on this guy. He's the centerpiece of my friend's army and I wanted him to look the part.

ReplyDeleteJohn: The banner image came from my client, he wanted something to go with the background of his army.
It was my job to match the colors with a Librarian and the chapter colors and make it all come together.
As for bulding it, it's the technique I developed. The tutorial is in the Tips and Tutorials sections under Modeling/Banners.
He looks cracking Ron, excellent conversion and a lovely paint job.

Very nice model overal. If I may I would suggest to put some more attention to the base because I think it lets down the overallimpression a bit simply because it is too minimalistic.

He is sweet!!! I get the pleasure of facing this model on the battlefield as I play against the owner. I have seen the rest of the stuff Ron has done in person and I am jealous of his skills.
ReplyDeleteCannonfodder: I'm working on that, I am trying to teach myself how to build them out of greenstuff and then get the image I want on there (with all the detail too).
ReplyDeleteThat way I could make them look like anything at all... flowing either direction and be as war torn as I want them to be.
It will take time but I'll get it eventually.
Blimey Ron, that was quick. Excellent work once again. Love the gold detail on the cloak interupted by the torn cloak, nice touch. Does this guy need a slight psychic hood tho?

Siph: That's the name the client chose. It fit's with the background and history of his force I believe.
ReplyDeleteThe decision was made to leave the psychic hood "off" for two reasons: 1. To keep that portion of the model open and uncluttered and 2. I wasn't too sure if I could pull it off as well as I wanted to for this model to be successful.
Great job. I realy like the highlighting on the armor, it really makes it look like metal, despite the non-metallic paint used.

ReplyDeleteIs the purple on the shield the same tone as on the cape?
jabberjabber: Yes it is, I just varied the highlights on each item depending on where the light source was.
ReplyDeleteThe cape has the highlights near the fur and the weathering at the bottom makes the purple change colors the whole way down.
The shield is just highlighted at the upper portion and the lower (closer to the ground the way it's held right now) is the clean purple.
I like the blue of the armor, and it's really a sweet conversion.

ReplyDeleteAbsaloutly brillaint! I've actually been working on my blending techniques (thanks to you)on spare bitz I have lying around... I'm still not that great, but using washes to blend togethor is a great help!

Peter: When it cam to highlighting this guy, I just kept using successive "layers" of highlights that covered smaller and smaller areas until I worked them up to near white or the pure highlight color I was using.

This is a fine centerpiece your client should be very happy.

Infact I'd like to see how you tackle this because I end up freehanding any flowing banner I do.

Dave: I don't generally use GW colors but the process remains the same regardless of the brand.
ReplyDeleteIt's a basecoat of blue followed with a GW wash of Asurmen Blue.
Then go back with the base color and clean up the model.
Then I take my highlight color (a lighter shade of blue but not white) and add progressively more amounts of it to my base color and go back in and blend the highlights on the top edges of each of his armour plates.
The final highlight is a thin edge or line of the pure highlight color.
WOW! I want to buy this for my toy collection.
