Rogue Trader Friday: 9th Necromundian

This, probably more than any Rogue Trader era artwork got me into the hobby.

I first saw it on the cover of the Imperial Guard unit box, and really struck me as something cool. Lined up next to the (goofy at that time to me) "Imperial Space Marines" box, it was easy to choose the guard box to spend my squandered allowance on.

It evokes "Napoleonic Army in Space" to me, with the officers in cuirassiers and the battle standards being marched into battle by ranks of massed infantry.

Good Stuff.

As a complement to Rogue Trader Fridays here at From the Warp, I have some Rogue Trader modeling going on over at my blog, Imperial Painting Table. This week, Imperial Guard Officers and Command .

This is one hell of an inspiring painting, the kind you just don't seem to get anymore. There was a lot more focus on the guard being made up of gang members from various hives, which I thought was a neat touch.

I think it's a shame that the guard are primarily Cadian now. The Shocktrooper helms just don't look as good as the old ones do, and certainly don't mesh quite as well with the Gothic theme as the older style might.

And the Guard was so colourful back then too - you could field beastmen regiments and Human Bomb Penal Troopers! Good to see the recent Codex bringing some of that back. I too fondly recall this pic, it was this sort of pic which gt me into Adeptus Titanicus and Epic - thanks!

The largest problem with the current Guard is they are not the Imperial Army.

Huh? What do you mean?

I mean, the Imperial Army was the nonhomogeneous amalgam of various troops in strange, unusual colours and outfits. Even the standard issue "Imperial Army" helmets as in the painting bear little or no relation to anything terrestrial - there is no "Russians is space" feel, no "US Army in space" style. Unfortunately, the science fiction/fantasy look died.

Not like today's Guard models. I like the Cadians. I do if I ignore the increased size/girth/height compared to the older Imps. I just wish they didn't try so hard to look like some sort of modern army knock-offs. I liked how the soldiers in Rogue Trader looked like something out of Star Wars rather than GI JOE. I think the Valkyrie looks far too much like a Hind.

Now it's like every single Guard army is the same. The conformity seems to have taken over and no matter what you name them or the colour you paint them, they look the same as just about anyone else's collection. Maybe this is a good thing in some ways. But I do miss the individuality of the bygone eras.
