Space Wolves: same list, but a new Codex

This is a Guest Post by Jon

Well, I just picked up my new Space Wolves Codex today, so I thought it would be fun to take a 1500 pt list that I've been running and see what I'd need to do to make it legal under the new codex. I thinking primarily about modeling implications more than making an 'I win' list.

Here's the list, under the old codex:

Wolf Lord on Bike
: Frost-Blade, Runic Charm, Wolf Pelt, Frags, Melta Bombs, Wolf Tooth Necklace

Ragnar Blackmane

Elite: 4x Wolf Scouts: Power weapon, Boltpistol, 2x Plasma Pistol, Melta Gun, Frags, Wolf Guard Pack Leader, Bolt Pistol, Thunder Hammer

Fast: 6x Blood Claws Bikers: 2x Power Fist, Melta Gun, Wolf Guard Pack Leader on bike: Runic Charm, Wolf Pelt, Frags, Twin Lightning Claws

Troop: 8x Blood Claws: 2x Power Fist, Flamer, Wolf Guard Pack Leader: Bolt Pistol, Thunder Hammer, Rhino, Extra armor

Troop: 6x Grey Hunters: 3x Bolters, 2x Plasma Pistol, Melta Gun, PF, PW, Razorback, Twin-Linked Las-Cannon

Troop: 9x Grey Hunters: 6x Bolter, 2x Plasma Pistol, Melta Gun, PF, PW, Wolf Guard Pack Leader: Terminator Armor, Runic Charm, Wolf Pelt, PW, Combi-Plasma

Here's the list under the new Codex:
Lets go squad by squad, Starting with the Troops:

Blood Claws: Well under the new dex they can only have one Power Fist so one guy with a fist will get promoted to wolf-guard, and I'll need to build a new guy with a chainsword. The Pack Leader can stay the same.

Grey Hunters: This is the Razorback squad; again the squaddies only get one fist or powerweapon, so I'll drop the fist from the squad and I'll have to drop a plasma pistol, (one less guy cringing on the dreaded 'one'. So one more guy with a bolter. The fist guy will get promoted to wolfguard and end up back in the squad. This squad now looks like: 5x Grey Hunters, 3x Bolters, 1 Plasma Pistol, 1 Melta Gun, Wolf Guard with Power Fist and Bolter in a Razorback.

Grey Hunters: The foot sloggers lose a power fist and a plasma pistol, and the Pack leader largely stays the same.

Wolf Scouts: The scouts lose a Plasma Pistol so one of them will get a bolt pistol, and now need another guy. The Pack Leader requires no changes.

Blood Claw Bikers: These guys lose a Power Fist, the pack leader stays largely the same.

Ragnar is still Ragnar, Unfortunately, he's not getting a new model, so I might use some of the new kit to create one in a more dynamic pose.

Wolf Lord on Bike, doesn't change much, besides getting more expensive points-wise.

So now modeling wise, I'm losing a few squaddies with fists, so they'll need to be replaced with regularly-armed dudes, likewise with 2 of the plasma-pistol armed Greyhunters and one of the plasma pistol Scouts. One of the fists will get re-done as a Pack-leader which just involves changing the color of his shoulder guard. He may also get a combi-weapon of some sort.

These changes leave me 35 points shy of 1500, so I might give a grey hunter or two the Mark of the Wulfen or maybe one of the scouts. I can envision using assault marine legs, to portray him throwing himself into combat, with his weapons lying at his feet as the beast within takes hold and he resorts to teeth and claws.

  1. I have to say this is one of the best articles I've seen on the codex. Everyone goes on and on about OP, but this in an of itself shows that a decent 15 pt list from the last codex, taks a bit of neutering in this codex, and not at much points savings.

    Well done.

  2. I'll second that. It's interesting to see the side by side comparison like this.
    Kinda puts it in perspective.

  3. It is interesting to see the side-by-side comparison. Everyone's all screaming about the big stuff, but it seems that most of the codex just changed some options and prices.

So, then, the big things would be, what?
-Rune Priests got more than one psychic power
    -Thunderwolf Cav
    -New HQs
    -Fenrisian Wolves as units

Big deal. It's nice to see someone NOT screaming their head off.

  4. I'm excited about the new codex ... and I have always loved my wolves ... but I am slightly disappointed from a fluff perspective. In the grim dark future of 40K ... I'm sorry ... I realize this is all make believe fantasy and there are plenty of other goofy models, etc. in the 40K range ... but ... come on people. These are SPACE MARINES ... I don't care how bad ass the wolves are ... they wouldn't be riding around with friggin wolves. One or two pets/company mascots with a commander ... ok cool I can buy that ... a special character with some crazy cyber wolf ... erm .. stretching it ... but ok. Packs of friggin dogs on the battlefield? HUH?? I'm honestly very non-plused about that.

  5. I tend to agree with lord of excess. I don't even like to model grey hunters without their helmets on and leave the hairy, fanged heads (that came out wrong) for the blood claws. I'm certainly not going to be putting any models on wolfback. I think the mark of the wolfen is the best addition but cheaper transports (like other vanilla marine) and cheaper base model cost on grey hunters, and all those itty bitty things are appreciated.

  7. Well, wolves as pets have been in SW Fluff since day one (Russ had pet wolves in 2nd Ed.!), but to me thunderwolves are a bit over the top. Which is why I am thinking about mounting a 13th Company Wolf Lord on a Juggy for a laugh (yeah got a spare juggy in a bits auction). As for wolf packs, well they have been mentioned before I am not sure if they make much sense running about with armoured marines.

Not that I will probably play with it mind you, just as an interesting modelling exercise.

  8. only 35pts left? Why, thats just enough for a Lone Wolf with a Power Weapon!

  9. Also this reminds me of the time I updated my Ork list to the newest codex n found I had about 100pts spare

  10. Actually, I re-did the math and found out I'm only 18 points shy of 1500.

I really didn't know what to expect when I started the comparison, and while I was tempted to tweek things as I went along, I decided that it would be better just to do what was necessary to make squads legal.

  11. Good idea doing the side by side comparison like that. And it was a nice write up too, thanks for sharing.
